Painted Treatments Part 2- Wall Patterns

Photobucket

Wallpaper has certainly made a comeback and has come far from the granny wallpapers of the past. The subject truly deserves a post of its own but today I'd like to share an alternative option in spirit of our "Painted Treatments" series. While wallpaper can add pattern and interest to a space, painted walls can also bring a unique and unexpected element to any room. We all tend to opt for 1 or 2 shades of paint to liven up the walls of our homes but you can really spice things up with painted patterns. Many clients are interested in an accent wall done in a coordinating color which can work in the right space but I like to take things to the next level and recommend applying a pattern to that wall and for those brave clients, applying the pattern to the entire room! With the use of paint you can create large scale, bold patterns that will truly amaze. I'm loving the floor to ceiling arabesque in chocolate and white!

Don't be Afraid of the Dark

Photobucket

Even the most courageous person can become timid when it comes to selecting a paint color. Dark or fully saturated colors will always create drama, but they can be phenomenal in even the smallest of spaces. You can create a high-contrast look by painting the trim white or a light color or by utilizing light colored furniture, fabrics, and art. Create a more uniform look by selecting other dark colored materials and by painting out all of trim in the same dark color.

Fun Idea: When using a dark paint color, play around with different sheens, from matte to high-gloss. Also, accessorize with mirrors and metallic materials to reflect light within the space.

Tip: If your space is small, or does not get much natural light, add a light colored wainscoting. This will break up the dark color and make the space lighter overall.

Painted Treatments Part 1- Floor Appeal

When revamping a space, the first thing that comes to most of our minds is paint. Giving your walls a new fresh coat of paint can give a space a whole new feel and look but if you can re-work that concept a painted floor could be the fix you've been looking for. Instead of refinishing your tired wood floor, I love the idea of bring it back to life with paint! Whether painting with one bright hue for that much needed splash of color or going bold with a graphic pattern or print, a painted floor can bring a rare and surprising dose of appeal to any space.

Tip: If you are putting in new floors or don't want to cover up the wood grain, try using two stains. With the contrast you can still create a stunning pattern. Take a look at the bold stripes below!
